Excellence in Music Instruction & Services since 2008.
Floyd Music School began as a dream of Mike and Jen in July 2007 when Hannah and Laurel Brooke won first place for twin fiddling at the Jimmy Edmonds Homecoming Competition.
Over the years, FMS has been located in the town’s historic Compton House (where the youth bluegrass band, The Blackberries, was formed), and more recently, in the old Pix Theater building at 115 W. Main St, also home to County Sales and County Records for many years.
Today, FMS is located at our family farm, 3416 Christiansburg Pike, Floyd, VA, with plans to expand the teaching studios to include a state-of-the-art recording facility.
Thanks to the robust internet provided by Citizens Communications, we are able to meet our students not only in person but also online, worldwide.
In the early 2000s, Floyd, a hub of bluegrass and old-time music, was buzzing with players and fans, but there was no central place for learning the craft or passing along the tradition.
In 2006, Mike began teaching fiddle, mandolin, and guitar in the small green room at the recently renovated Floyd Country Store. Soon after, Jen added her private piano and flute students to the Floyd Music School roster.
